Ghali

Ghali derives from the Arabic root 'gh-l-y' (غلا), which conveys the idea of something being costly, precious, or of high value. In classical Arabic, the adjective 'ghali' describes something so valuable it commands a high price, and by extension it came to mean dear or beloved in the emotional sense, a child so precious that no price could equal them. Arabic personal names were carried across North Africa with the spread of Islam from the seventh century onwards, and names expressing the preciousness or belovedness of a child became embedded in naming cultures from Egypt to Mauritania. In Morocco and Algeria in particular, Ghali became a common choice, shaped partly by the Arabic dialects of the Maghreb region, where the 'gh' sound (a voiced velar fricative) is a natural feature of everyday speech.
