Maher

Maher derives from the Arabic root m-h-r (م-ه-ر), which means to become expert or proficient in something. The verb mahara fi means to master a skill, and the active participle mahir (or maher in the colloquial pronunciation) means a skilled craftsman, expert, or virtuoso.

The same root gives mahr, the dowry or bridal gift in Islamic marriage law, originally the payment that demonstrated a groom's competence and ability to provide, later formalised as a required component of the Islamic marriage contract.
