Nchimunya originates from the Tonga language, a Bantu language spoken by the Tonga people of southern Zambia, particularly in the Southern Province around the Kafue and Zambezi rivers, and also by Tonga communities in Zimbabwe. The name is a direct theological statement: 'nchi' relates to a qualifier of exclusivity or limitation, while 'munya' connects to the concept of God or the divine, yielding the meaning 'only God knows' or 'God alone knows.' The Tonga people have a tradition of theophoric naming, in which names reference God's power, will, or knowledge, and Nchimunya is one of the most philosophically rich examples of this practice.
