Osarumen

Osarumen comes from the Edo language spoken by the Bini people of Edo State in southern Nigeria. It is composed of 'Osa,' the Edo word for God or the supreme deity; 'ru,' a connective verbal element; and 'men,' meaning knows or understands. The full phrase translates as 'God knows best' or 'God understands.' The 'Osa' prefix in Edo naming is directly analogous to the 'Olu' or 'Oluwa' prefix in Yoruba naming and the 'Chi' element in Igbo naming, each being a different ethnic group's primary way of invoking God in a name. The Edo language belongs to the Edoid branch of the Niger-Congo family and is spoken predominantly in Edo and Delta states. The Benin Kingdom, which flourished from the thirteenth century onward, was one of the preeminent political and cultural powers in West African history, and its naming traditions carry that historical weight. Other Edo names beginning with 'Osa' include Osarugue, Osagie, and Osasu, forming a recognisable naming family.

The Bini people of Edo State have a naming tradition shaped by the cultural and spiritual legacy of the Benin Kingdom, one of the longest-lasting monarchies in African history.
