The root generates a wide family of related words including tamam, meaning 'done' or 'complete,' and the verb atamma, meaning 'to perfect' or 'to finish.' The doubled medial consonant in Tameem intensifies the root meaning, implying not just completeness but a thoroughgoing, exemplary wholeness. In Classical Arabic, the ideal of tamam was central to concepts of beauty, virtue, and excellence: the full moon was described as tamam because it had reached its perfect form, and a generous act could be praised as tamam al-karam, the epitome of generosity.
