Tejomay

Tejomay is constructed from the Sanskrit noun 'tejas', one of the richest and most philosophically significant words in the entire Sanskrit vocabulary. 'Tejas' denotes radiance, brilliance, fire, vital energy, and the luminous power associated with divinity, heroism, and wisdom. In classical Sanskrit philosophy it is listed as one of the panchamahabhutas, the five great elements, where it represents fire and light. The suffix '-maya' or '-may' in Sanskrit is a highly productive morpheme meaning 'made of', 'full of', or 'pervaded by', and it appears in many Sanskrit compounds: 'anandamaya' (full of bliss), 'chidanandamaya' (full of consciousness and bliss). Thus Tejomay means 'one who is filled with or made of tejas', a being of radiance. The word 'tejas' itself is cognate with the Latin 'tegere' and related Indo-European roots, reflecting an ancient shared concept of protective brilliance. In Vedic literature tejas is one of the distinguishing marks of gods, fire sacrifices, and awakened sages.

The concept of tejas, the radiance from which Tejomay takes its meaning, is woven through Vedic literature as one of the defining qualities of the divine. Surya, the sun god, is described as tejomay. Agni, the fire god at the centre of Vedic ritual, is tejomay. Great sages who have practised tapasya for years are said to radiate tejas. Classical musician Tejomay Vyas represents the name in contemporary cultural life, connecting its heritage of brilliance with the discipline and inner light that classical Indian music demands.
