Trinetra

Trinetra is a classical Sanskrit compound built from 'tri' (three, from the Proto-Indo-European root that also gives English 'three' and Latin 'tres') and 'netra' (eye, guide, leader, from the root 'ni', to lead or guide, since the eye literally guides movement). The compound is found in Sanskrit texts as early as the Rigveda and appears prolifically throughout the Shaiva Agamas, the Shiva Purana, the Linga Purana, and numerous devotional hymns. Shiva's third eye, located between and slightly above his two physical eyes, is known by several names: Trinetra, Jnana Chakshu (eye of knowledge), and sometimes Agni Netra (fire eye). The third eye is said to have opened when Parvati covered Shiva's two physical eyes in playfulness, plunging the universe into darkness, and the third eye burst forth to restore light. In another well-known story, Shiva opened his third eye to reduce Kamadeva, the god of desire, to ashes, demonstrating its annihilating power over lower forces.

As one of the best-known epithets of Lord Shiva, Trinetra carries the full weight of Shaiva devotion. Shiva is the most worshipped deity in India by some counts, and naming a son Trinetra is a direct act of Shaiva devotion: the child is named for the most potent attribute of the god of destruction, transformation, and liberation. The third eye in Hindu iconography represents the vision that transcends ordinary dualistic perception, seeing past surface appearances into the ultimate nature of reality. In contemporary Indian life the name received renewed attention through Trinetra Gummaraju, an Indian transgender actress and activist who became widely known through her role in the web series Good Luck Sakhi and her advocacy work, demonstrating that this ancient name can be carried with great purpose into modern contexts.
