Abhijit

Abhijit is a compound Sanskrit name formed from two elements: 'abhi' (अभि), a prefix meaning toward, over, or with intensity, and 'jit' (जित्), the past participle of the root 'ji,' meaning to conquer or to win. Together they form the meaning 'thoroughly victorious' or 'one who has completely conquered.' The name appears in classical Sanskrit texts and the epics, where victory was one of the most celebrated virtues. The root 'ji' also gives us names such as Ajit (unconquered) and Vijay (victory), forming a family of names centred on the concept of triumph. Beyond its direct meaning, Abhijit is the name of one of the 28 nakshatras in the Vedic lunar calendar, a special asterism associated with the bright star Vega in the constellation Lyra. The nakshatra Abhijit is considered highly auspicious and is invoked at the start of important ceremonies, particularly between the 24th and 25th nakshatras in certain astronomical calculations. The Devanagari spelling is अभिजीत. The name has long variant spellings including Abhijeet, the more phonetically simplified form common in Maharashtra.
