Anirudh

Anirudh derives from the Sanskrit 'aniruddha,' composed of 'an,' the negating prefix, and 'ruddha,' the past participle of the root 'rudh,' meaning 'to obstruct,' 'to block,' or 'to impede.' The full compound therefore means 'one who is not obstructed' or 'the unstoppable one.' The root 'rudh' is ancient and appears across Sanskrit literature in military, philosophical, and devotional contexts, always carrying the sense of something being checked or contained. Its negated form carries an equally powerful charge: the individual or force that cannot be stopped, contained, or turned aside. In Puranic Sanskrit, the name appears as Aniruddha, the slightly longer classical form, while colloquial usage across North and South India has produced the shorter Anirudh. The name is listed among the thousand names of Vishnu in the Vishnu Sahasranama, a devotional text recited in temples and households throughout India, which has cemented the name's sacred status. Anirudh carries a rich mythological biography. In the Bhagavata Purana, Aniruddha is the son of Pradyumna and the grandson of Lord Krishna, a young hero celebrated for his valour and his remarkable love story with Usha, the daughter of the demon king Banasura. The story of Aniruddha and Usha, in which the divine youth is magically transported to Usha's chamber after she falls in love with him through a dream, and the subsequent battle between Krishna and Banasura to free him, is one of the most beloved romantic episodes in Puranic literature. This narrative heritage gives the name a quality of romantic heroism that goes beyond its literal meaning of 'unstoppable.' As one of the names of Vishnu in the Sahasranama, Anirudh also carries the weight of divine epithet. In contemporary culture, the name has been popularised by the hugely successful South Indian composer Anirudh Ravichander, whose work has introduced the name to younger generations across India.
