Arndt

Arndt developed as a Low German and Central German contracted form of Arnold, which itself derives from the Old High German compound 'Arnwald,' built from 'arn' (eagle) and 'wald' (power, ruler, or might). The eagle was a bird of enormous symbolic importance in Germanic culture, associated with Odin in Norse mythology and later adopted as a heraldic symbol by the Holy Roman Empire and its successor states.

The contraction of Arnold into Arndt followed patterns common in German regional dialects, particularly in northern and central Germany, where compound names were often shortened in everyday speech. This informal variant eventually stabilized as a given name in its own right, appearing in records from the late medieval period onward. The ending 'dt' is a characteristically German orthographic convention, seen in names like Gerdt and Berndt.

The name gained cultural visibility in the nineteenth century partly through the fame of the poet Ernst Moritz Arndt, whose surname shares the same derivation.
