Chad is an English form of the Old English name 'Ceadda', of uncertain but possibly Celtic origin, perhaps related to a Welsh word meaning 'battle' or 'defender'. It was borne by Saint Chad (Ceadda) of Mercia, a 7th-century English bishop celebrated for his humility and pastoral dedication.
