Edina

Edina appears to derive from two possible sources: a poetic Latinized form of Edinburgh used by Scottish poet Robert Burns in his 1786 address 'Edina! Scotia's darling seat,' and as a feminine elaboration of Edwin or Edgar built on the Old English element 'ead' meaning 'prosperity.' The name spread into wider use during the nineteenth century when Scottish literary romanticism was fashionable in England and America.

Edina straddles two traditions that converged powerfully in the 19th century. As a poetic Latin form of Edinburgh, it was popularised by Robert Burns, whose 1786 Address to Edinburgh opened with 'Edina! Scotia's darling seat!' and cemented the city's romantic literary identity for generations. In more recent British culture, Edina is primarily associated with Absolutely Fabulous's Edina Monsoon, the magnificently chaotic fashion publicist played by Jennifer Saunders, giving the name a camp, satirical comedy dimension alongside its graver literary heritage. This double identity, between Burns's grandeur and AbFab's absurdism, makes Edina a name with a surprisingly rich cultural life. Outside Britain it is particularly popular in Hungary, where it is a well-established feminine name in its own right.
