Garfield

Garfield derives from Old English, combining 'gar', meaning a spear, with 'feld', referring to open land, a field, or grassland. The 'gar' element was common in Old English personal names and place names, appearing in names such as Gareth and in the geographical term that survives in modern English as 'gore', referring to a triangular piece of land. The 'feld' element was equally productive, forming the basis of hundreds of English place names, including Sheffield, Huddersfield, and countless village names across the Midlands and the North. As a place name, Garfield referred to open land associated with or shaped like a spear point, likely describing the triangular or elongated form of a particular meadow or common. Garfield was a remarkable figure, the last American president to have been born in a log cabin, a Civil War general, a classical scholar, and a man known for his ability to write simultaneously in Latin with one hand and Greek with the other. His assassination in 1881, only months into his term, made him a figure of national mourning and inspired generations of parents to honour him through naming. The second, equally enduring dimension of the name came in 1978 when cartoonist Jim Davis named his lasagna-obsessed, Monday-hating comic strip cat Garfield, honouring his own grandfather James Garfield Davis, who had in turn been named after the president. This two-step presidential homage, as Davis has described it, gave the name a cheerful, domestic quality that sits engagingly alongside its more serious historical associations. The Garfield strip became one of the most widely syndicated in history, making the name known to readers across the world. British actor Andrew Garfield has more recently added a contemporary, internationally recognised face to the name through his work in film and theatre.
