Ruilan

Ruilan is composed of two characters with strong classical associations. The first, 瑞 (ruì), carries the jade radical and conveys the idea of auspiciousness and good omens, particularly those associated with rare and beautiful things. It is pronounced in the fourth tone, giving the name a confident opening sound. The second character, 兰 (lán), pronounced in the second tone with a rising inflection, refers to the orchid, one of the most celebrated plants in Chinese botanical and artistic tradition. The great Confucian scholars and poets frequently used orchid imagery in their writing to praise those who cultivated inner virtue rather than outward show. Giving a daughter the name Ruilan therefore placed her within this tradition of quietly excellent character, while the 瑞 component added the wish for fortune to accompany virtue.
