Shelumiel is composed of two well-established Hebrew elements. The first is 'shalom,' the Hebrew word for peace, completeness, and wholeness, one of the most semantically rich words in the Hebrew language, encompassing not just the absence of conflict but a state of total flourishing. The second element is 'El,' the ancient Semitic word for God, which appears across the ancient Near East in Akkadian, Ugaritic, and Phoenician texts as well as throughout the Hebrew Bible. Together they form a theophoric name, a name that incorporates a divine element, a common pattern in biblical Hebrew naming. Theophoric names with 'El' are found throughout the Bible: Daniel (God is my judge), Michael (who is like God), and Raphael (God has healed). Shelumiel follows this exact structure but is notable for using 'shalom' rather than a verbal root, making its meaning unusually direct. The name appears in its Greek form in the Septuagint as Salamiel, showing the standard vowel shifts that occurred when Hebrew names passed into Greek.

Shelumiel's primary cultural significance lies in his appearance in the Book of Numbers as the designated leader of the tribe of Simeon, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. He is named in the census accounts and in the record of the tribal leaders who brought offerings at the dedication of the Tabernacle, placing him at the very heart of the Israelite communal and religious structure described in the Torah. His father's name, Zurishaddai (meaning 'the Almighty is my rock'), suggests a family tradition of names that expressed trust in divine strength and peace. In post-biblical Jewish tradition, Shelumiel has rarely been revived as an everyday name, but it carries the prestige of genuine antiquity. In Christian biblical traditions, the name occasionally appears in discussions of the twelve tribal leaders, giving it a cross-confessional recognition among those engaged with scriptural study.
