Tankred

Tankred derives from Old High German 'thank' (thought, deliberate consideration, intention, cognate with modern German 'Dank', thanks, and with the idea of considered reflection) and 'rad' (counsel, advice, the same element as in Konrad, meaning bold counsel, and Gerhard, meaning spear-counsel).

The '-rad' or '-rath' element is one of the most productive in Germanic naming, appearing in Conrad, Gerard, Richard, and many others. It always denotes counsel, advice, or deliberate wisdom, values central to Germanic aristocratic culture.

The 'thank-' element is less common as a name prefix but is documented in Old High German name compounds from the 9th century onward. It suggests a quality of deliberate, considered thinking rather than impulsive action.

The name was carried into broad European fame by the Norman knight Tancred, who participated in the First Crusade (1096–1099). Tasso immortalized him in Gerusalemme Liberata (1581), which was widely translated and read in German-speaking regions.
