Themi derives directly from the ancient Greek noun themis (θέμις), one of the most significant legal and theological terms in the Greek language. Unlike nomos, which referred to human-made statutory law, themis described divine or natural law: the unwritten cosmic order upheld by the gods. It encompassed concepts of divine justice, proper custom, and the sacred bonds of hospitality and family. The word is Proto-Indo-European in origin, related to Sanskrit dharma and bearing deep cultural parallels to concepts of cosmic moral order across Eurasian traditions.

In mythology, Themis was one of the second-generation Titans and a consort of Zeus, with whom she had the Horai (the Hours or Seasons) and the Moirai (the Fates). Her role was that of divine counselor and prophet, and she was believed to preside over the assembly of the gods. Her name was invoked in oath-taking and legal proceedings throughout the ancient Greek world, cementing its association with integrity and righteous judgment.
