Tingyu joins 婷 (tíng, second tone) and 玉 (yù, fourth tone) in a combination that moves from the idea of graceful bearing to the material most associated with virtue in Chinese civilisation. The character 婷 appears almost exclusively in feminine contexts, built around the woman radical (女) and conveying a refined, poised elegance rather than overt beauty. The character 玉 (jade) is one of the oldest and most philosophically loaded characters in the Chinese written language. Its written form depicts three pieces of jade strung together on a cord, an ancient representation of the material's value. In Mandarin, the combination 婷玉 has a pleasing tonal rhythm: rising second tone followed by falling fourth tone.
