Xinhua

Xinhua is composed of two characters that together create one of the most loaded name combinations in modern Chinese. The first character, 新 (xīn), first tone, means new, fresh, or renewed, a straightforward but powerful character associated with beginnings, reform, and transformation. It appears frequently in the vocabulary of Chinese political and social change, lending it a sense of forward momentum. The second character, 华 (huá), second tone, is considerably more layered. The Xinhua News Agency (新华社, Xīnhuá Shè), founded in 1931 in Jiangxi Province during the early years of the Chinese Communist movement, grew to become one of the largest news organisations in the world, with correspondents operating in nearly every country. As China's official state news agency, it serves as the primary distributor of news to domestic media and the main voice of Chinese official positions to international audiences. This means the name Xinhua is genuinely global, appearing on wire copy read by journalists worldwide every day. For individuals who bear this name, it is a conversation piece in international settings. Among Chinese parents of the mid-twentieth century, the name was chosen with conscious intent: the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 sparked a wave of names celebrating national renewal, and Xinhua, with its meaning of 'new China', fit perfectly into this tradition.
