Xoliswa derives from the Xhosa verb 'xolisa,' meaning to pacify, to make peace, or to cause someone to forgive. The root 'xol-' relates to peace-making and forgiveness, and the causative suffix '-isa' means 'to cause or make happen,' while '-wa' is a passive or feminine extension. The initial 'x' represents a lateral click consonant, one of three click sounds in Xhosa borrowed from neighboring Khoisan languages, giving the name a distinctive phonetic quality.
