Zhenming

Zhenming is written 振明 in its most common form. The character 明 (míng) is among the oldest and most frequently used in Chinese writing, attested in oracle-bone inscriptions from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600 to 1046 BCE). Its composition, sun (日) on the left and moon (月) on the right, makes it one of the most visually intuitive characters in the script: two great luminaries combined to represent the concept of light, clarity, and intelligence. In classical texts, 明 carries philosophical weight as both literal brightness and moral clarity, appearing throughout Confucian and Daoist writing to describe the condition of the enlightened mind. The first character, 振 (zhèn), in its falling fourth tone, brings action and forcefulness to the name.
