Jaidev

Jaidev is a compound name formed from two of the most recognisable Sanskrit elements in Indian nomenclature. The first component, 'jai' (also spelled 'jaya'), derives from the Sanskrit root 'ji,' meaning to conquer, to win, or to be victorious. Jai is among the most exuberant words in the Hindi and Sanskrit lexicon, used as an exclamation of triumph and devotion -- as in 'Jai Hind' (Victory to India) or 'Jai Shri Ram' -- and it carries with it a sense of joyful celebration as much as martial conquest. The second component, 'dev,' comes from the Sanskrit 'deva,' meaning god, deity, or divine being, related to the Proto-Indo-European root meaning to shine. The Gita Govinda, composed around 1200 CE in what is now Odisha, is considered one of the great masterworks of devotional Sanskrit poetry, and its author's name has ensured that Jaidev remains associated not only with divine victory but with artistic and spiritual excellence. In contemporary India, Jaidev is regarded as a name of substance and tradition, commonly given by Hindu families who want to honour both the divine and the long history of India's cultural achievements.
