Menghan

Menghan is written as 梦涵. The first character, 梦 (mèng, fourth tone), means dream or to dream. In classical Chinese it was written with the more complex traditional form 夢, which depicted the confused, disorientating quality of sleep through its visual components, but the simplified modern character retains the full conceptual meaning. Dreams in Chinese culture carry genuine philosophical weight: Zhuangzi's butterfly dream, one of the foundational passages of Daoist literature, asks whether the philosopher is a man who dreamed of being a butterfly or a butterfly now dreaming of being a man, making 梦 a character associated with profound questions about identity and perception. The second character, 涵 (hán, second tone), is more unusual in the naming lexicon and contributes much of the name's distinctive character. Its water radical (氵) indicates a connection to depth, containment, and flow, and the full character means to encompass, to hold within, or to have genuine breadth of character and mind. It is a character that resists easy single-word translation, as it describes simultaneously a physical capacity and a personal quality: being broad-minded, emotionally deep, and capable of holding complexity without being overwhelmed by it. The rise of 涵 (hán) as a name character in mainland China from the 1980s onwards tracks a broader cultural shift in naming preferences. The character 涵 became one of the markers of this shift, appearing in both male and female names and reflecting parental hopes for children who would be emotionally intelligent and resilient rather than simply outwardly accomplished.
