Mutoni

Mutoni derives from the Kinyarwanda language, the national language of Rwanda and a Bantu language also spoken in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Uganda. The root 'toni' or 'tona' in Kinyarwanda carries connotations of smallness, delicateness, and gentleness, and the prefix 'mu-' forms the singular noun, giving the name the sense of 'one who is gentle' or 'the small and tender one.' Kinyarwanda has a highly developed naming culture in which names are chosen to reflect the moment, character, or hoped-for attributes associated with a child. Names describing physical or temperamental qualities of a newborn are particularly common, and Mutoni falls into this category. The name has been in use for generations across Rwanda and remains among the more recognisable traditional Rwandan female names.
