Prithika is formed from the Sanskrit 'prithvi', the ancient and revered word for the earth, to which the feminine diminutive suffix '-ika' has been appended. Prithvi itself is derived from the root 'prithu', meaning broad, wide, or expansive, a vivid description of the flat earth as conceived in ancient cosmology. In Vedic tradition Prithvi is the goddess of the earth, paired with Dyaus (sky) as the primordial couple from whom creation unfolds. She appears in the Rigveda as Prithivi Mata (Mother Earth), honoured as the sustainer of all life. The word 'prithu' also gave rise to the legendary king Prithu, who in the Puranas is credited with making the earth cultivable and fruitful.
